"S.U.S. (Shut Up Sam) Records" is a small business I started back in the summer of 2021 and derived from a collaging class. One day at a thrift store, I stopped by the $1 bin of vinyls (as I normally do) and saw a lot of scratches on an old Christmas album. When a vinyl has too many scratches, it becomes impossible to use on your record player. So, I started to think of ways to repurpose this vinyl and give it a new meaning. Sure, I couldn't play it on my player. However, what if I could paint and collage on it? Make it a canvas instead of another addition to plastic pollution?
Since then, this utimately became a passion project. I learned about the harmful effects of plastic pollution from my environmental blog I also created in 2021 and I didn't want something so rich of BPA'S (Bisephonal-A) and PVC's (Polyvinyl Chloride) to add to the problem. Not only do I upcycle scratched vinyls, I also repurpose thrifted magazines and books. Rarely do I go out of my way to print photos unless commissioned by another student because I'd rather upcycle than reprint. I'd like to give a huge shoutout to Green Element in Rogers Park for providing affordable and rich quality content to use in my projects. This passion project of mine wouldn't be the same without them.
